At the age of five, Spencer Margaux Erard-Coupé had just began figure skating. Even at such a young age, Erard-Coupé had already competed in competitions and won a handful of medals. Her coaches saw a lot of potential in her with her strong skating skills, however, she always knew her heart belonged somewhere else.

“I tried figure skating and dance, my mom did both, and so did my older sister, but I did not enjoy it like they did,” Erard-Coupé said, ” When I was at the rink I was always going over to the hockey side, trying on equipment and watching the guys skate around. That was what I wanted to do.”

Her mom was hesitant at first seeing all of the men slamming each other into the boards, she could not imagine her little girl out there.

“It was really hard for me to wrap my head around,” mom Jill Banks said, “but I never saw her eyes light up the way they did when she was watching hockey, I wasn’t going to be the one to stop her.”

Erard-Coupé started her hockey career with street hockey, just to get a feel for what she was doing. In her first year, being in an all boys league she was ranked in the top 10 players, and the number one goalie in the entire league.

From here she moved to ice like she always dreamed of. Her transition from street to ice was seamless. She tended to excel even more on the ice which impressed everyone. When she got a little bit older she joined her first all girls league and has continued with them ever since.

Now about to be a graduating senior, she plans on attending Rowan University to join their Women’s Club Ice Hockey Program, which is the first club team ever from the university to be heading to a national championship this weekend in Texas.
